Photosynthesis-Christine Flashcards
What is the process of photosynthesis using words and symbols?
Carbon dioxide, water and radiant energy –> glucose and oxygen.
What are the 5 required raw materials for photosynthesis?
CO2, H2O, Radiant energy, Chlorophyll, Enzymes.
Where do the required raw materials, for photosynthesis, come from?
CO2 = atmosphere; H2O = soil; radiant energy = sun; chlorophyll = chloroplasts of green plants.
What are the 2 products of photosynthesis?
Glucose and oxygen
Where do the 2 products of photosynthesis come from?
Glucose = stored in the plant as starch; Oxygen = released into the atmosphere.
What are the 5 parts of a typical chloroplast?
Double membrane, granum, intergranum, stroma, lamela
Where does the light phase occur?
In the grana of the chlorplasts, in the presence of light, light dependent
Where does the dark phase occur?
In the stroma of the chloroplasts, in light or darkness and is light independent
Give a brief description of photolysis
Water molecules are split up into energy-rich H-atoms and Oxygen atoms
Give a description of phosphorylation
The energy carrier ATP is also formed from ADP to be used in the dark phase
In which phases, light or dark, does the Calvin Cycle occur?
Dark phase
What is the role of ATP as an important energy carrier in the cell
Energy is needed for cell metabolism, ATP is then broken into ADP which releases energy.
What is the importance photosynthesis (4 main ideas)?
Keeps oxygen concentration constant, keeps CO2 level constant, provides food, makes chemical energy available for cell functioning.
