What is Homeostasis?
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment in the body.
What are the two hormones secreted by the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas that control the glucose concentration in the blood?
Insulin and Glucose.
What happens when the glucose concentration in the blood falls below normal?
The alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans detect the decrease and respond by secreting glucagon into the blood.
What does a glucagon do?
It stimulates the conversion of glycogen to glucose in the liver and muscles.
What is Diabetes mellitus?
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that is chronic and incurable, characterised by high glucose levels in the blood.
What is hyperglycaemia?
An increased blood glucose level.
