Plant Reproduction
What is plant reproduction?
biological process which new individuals are produced from an existing individual. Genes are transfered to the next generation (essential for survival and evolution)
Two different types of
Asexual and sexual
What is the differences between asexual and sexual reproducation
Asexual has one parent and all offsprings have the same genetic composition as the parent and no gametes are involved.
2 advantages of asexual and sexual reproduction
A large number of offsprings are produced rapidly and simply in favourable conditions
Energy expenditure is low (no gametes produced)
Show greater genetic variation. Show greater chance of survival in changing environments
Forms basis of evolution because it can results in formation of new species.
2 disadvantages of asexual and sexual reproduction
Difficulty in adaption to change of the environment
Offspring share weak characteristics.
Process takes longer than asexual because gamete formation takes place
Plants need agents to disperse pollen and seeds
Self pollution
transfer of ripe pollen from an anther to a receptive stigma of the same flower or other flowers on the same plant
