Virus Part 2.1 ( Prions & Protein Infectious ) Flashcards
What does prions stand for?
PROteinaceois
INfectious
Particles
Are prions viruses?
No
Are prions bacteria?
No
What are diseases associated with prions ? (3)
Kuru
Mad cow
Creuztfeld Jacob disease
What are prions? Cells? No cells?
They are literally just infectious proteins floating around
Are prions the most resistant in trying to kill?
Yes
Are prions fatal? And are they slow infection?
Yes
What does prion disease causes? Or more so how does it effect us? And appearance of what ?
All are neurological disease
Spongy appearance of the brain
What is the prototype of prions?
Mad cow disease
What is PrPc ?
Normal cellular protein
What is PrPsc?
Scrapie protein, accumulates in brains cells, forming plaques
How does prions infect us? (2)
Goes to the brain
Converts normal protein into infectious abnormal protein
How can prions spread? (3)
Comminated tissues
( cow eats sheep tissues )
Genetically inherited
Dirty equipment
Why is it called PrPsc ( scrapie )?
Because when we feed the cow the sheep’s tissues, the sheep was suffering from a disease of scrapie
What are the 8 steps for prions infections?
- The normal PrPc is on surface
- PrPsc is acquired or genetically mutated
- PrPc reacts PrPsc on surface
- PrPsc converts PrPc into PrPsc
- Keeps converting
- PrPsc enters through endocytosis
- PrPsc accumulates in endosomes
- Endosomes turn into lysosomes ( kills the cell )
Is there a cure, vaccine, treatment for cow disease?
No
What is Kuru?
Cannibalism
( Eating dead people, brain and heart )
Prions are heat resistant ?
Yes, very, prions will survive it
A provirus can be removed from a host cells? ( true or false )
False
What are viroids? And causes?
Small pieces of naked rna that dause plant disease
Viroids are closed and _____?
folded, that protects it from cellular enzymes
Does viroids rna code for anything?
Nope
