Virtualization and Cloud Computing Flashcards
sophisticated software that handles the input and output to/from a virtual machine that normally be handled by hardware
hypervisor
software or hardware that converts inputs into an entirely different platform
emulator
a “copy” of a virtual machine that saves the VM’s state at that moment, enabling for a quick return later
snapshot
a hypervisor/OS combo that has no software between it and the hardware; also, Type-1 hypervisor
bare-metal hypervisor
a hypervisor that does require software between it and the hardware, such as VMWare Workstation
Type-2 hypervisor
open source, Linux-based hypervisor that is closely integrated into Linux’s kernel
Kernal-based Virtual Machine (KVM)
a server that can present a number of hard disks over the network as a number of logical disks; doesn’t have its own file system
storage area network (SAN)
infrastructure choice for supporting a SAN, designed for high-performance stroage
Fibre Channel (FC)/Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE)
infrastructure choice for supporting a SAN, uses the SCSI protocol to communicate across networks with cheap, readily available hardware
Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI)
larger size frame, usually about 9000 bytes long, designed to reduce the number of frames moving through a network
jumbo frame
infrastructure choice for supporting a SAN, uses unique NICs and cabling; links are usually aggregated, using 4 or 8 connections
Infini Band (IB)
dedicated file server with its own file system and uses hardware and software designed for serving and storing files
network attached storage (NAS)
method for giving a VM an IP address by using a software connection to pass traffic from a real NIC to a virtual one
bridge the NIC
the centralized configuration, installation, and handling of every switch in a network
distributed switching
part of a physical router or switch that makes decisions on how to move traffic
control plane
