Cabling and Topology Flashcards
Older connector type for coaxial cables that used to be the most popular
BNC connector
Connector commonly used today on coaxial cables for connecting cables modems or cable boxes; this connector is inserted and twisted onto the other port
F type connector
Thinner coaxial cable type used primarily for cable television connections; 75 ohms
RG-59
Most predominant cabling type for coaxial cables, used primarily for cable connections and is thicker than the other coaxial cable type; 75 ohms
RG-6
Connectors for telephone landline cables, using two pairs of UTP wires
RJ-11
Connectors for UTP cables using 4 pairs of UTP wires, usually and incorrectly referred to as RJ-45 connectors
8P8C
Fiber-optic cable that uses LEDs to send light signals; usually 850-nm wavelength signals
multimode fiber (MMF)
fiber-optic cable that uses lasers to send light signals; signals are typically 1310 or 1550 nm wavelengths
single-mode fiber (SMF)
problem unique to multimode fiber that results in dissimilar arrival times of signals in slightly different lengths of cable
modal distortion
standard which all serial communication does/did take place on a PC, typically using a D-subminiature 9-pin male connector (DB-9), and used low data rates - about 56000 bps
RS-232
standard connector for parallel communication on a computer, a 25-pin female DB connector
DB-25
type of fire rating used for vertical cable runs between floors
