Viral Structure Flashcards
5 things that define virus
Infectious, obligate, intracell parasite
DNA or RNA genetic material
Genetic material will direct productions of new virus particles (virions)
New virions made in host cell
New virions produced in host cell and then trasnport genetic material to another host cell
All viruses have
Capsid (surrounds nucleic acid)
Spikes
Glycoproteins that mediate attachment (tropism)
Enveloped virus
Has envelope derived from a host cell…the envelope is where the spikes are attached
All viruses must
produce mRNA that can be read and translated by host cell ribosomes
Viral classifcation mostly based on
Genetic material and whether naked or enveloped
Hep viruses classifications
C - ssRNA+ enveloped
E and A - SSRNA+ naked
B - dsDNA enveloped
Hep viruses transmission and why
A and E fecal
B and C blood borne
Fecal are naked…capsule is stable and can survive the GI tract…envelope derived from hepatocytes cannot survive the GI tract…envelope contained the spikes so it can’t attach
