Q

Attachment and entry of naked

A

Spikes bind to receptor…receptor mediated endocytosis (in a vesicle)…release into cytoplasm and then uncoated

A

Envelope will fuse to cell membrane…nucleocapsid will enter the cell and then uncoated

Q

After replication, what happens to each

A

Naked exit via cytolysis
Enveloped RNA “Bud” from the host cell using cell membrane
DNA will exit in vesicle via exocytosis using nuclear membrane as new envelope

Q

Possible effects of viral infection on host cell

A

Abortive where no progeny produced
Productive viral infection where host not killed and virus released
Latent infection where incorporated into DNA or stays as episome…reactivated later
Viral infection results in death and production of progeny

Q

Patterns of viral infection and examples

A

Acute infection followed by clearing - Hep A
Acute infection followed by latent infection and periodic reactivation - HSV 1,2
Acute infection followed by chornic infection - Hep C
Acute infection followed by persistent infection and virus overproduction - HIV
