what is vibro vulnificus infection
gram negative bacterium that causes serious wound infections and sepsis
What conditions is vibro vulnificus most infectious in?
cirrhosis, hemochromatosis, and chronic diseases (DM2, CKD and hepatitis)
what foods are associated with vibro vulnificus?
undercooked or raw shellfish especially raw oysters
infection can be fatal so high risk pts should avoid eating or even handling raw shell fish
Diagnosis of vibro vulnificus is by:
clearly defined or infectious source and or gastroenteritis with characteristic bullous skin lesions
can check blood, stool, wound cultures
Antibiotics for treatment for vibrio vulnificus infection
tetracycline wiht ICU monitoring because pts can rapidly decompensate in 12 hours or develop bullous lesions, DIC or even death.
how does a mycobacterium marinum infection occur?
see abrasions in extremity that occur in non chlorinated water. see it with fisherman, oyster handlers, swimmers and aquarium workers that are predisposed to infection
see acid fast organisms
can have red nodule as well at site of infection
