Q

Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD)

A

transmission is common by contact with contaminated feathers but feces and oral secretions are also reported, virus is stable in environment highly contagious

CS- feather loss and beak defects, immunosuppressive

Diagnosis is PCR or histo showing inclusion bodies in the skin and feathers

Prevention is vaccine and supportive care is the only tx

Q

Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD)

A

Avian borna virus

macaw, cockatoos, and conure are most susceptible

Q

Pacheco’s Disease

A

Herpesvirus, highly contagious and is most common in bird homes, transmission is direct contact and birds can be asymm. carriers of it

CS are green urates which indicate liver damage or no CS if asymm carrier

Virus isolation with hepatic inclusion bodies

Consider Pacheco’s disease in any psittacine that dies suddenly with no previous signs of illness

A

seen mostly in psittacine birds, delayed crop emptying and regurg, feather abn and petechia

diagnosis is Histopathology with viral intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen,
heart and feather follicles
