Vestibular System Flashcards
Utricle and Saccule
Static position of the head with respect to gravity and linear acceleration
(Utricle - car movement)
(Saccule- Elevator)
Semicircular Canals
Signal rotation and angular acceleration
(head rotation)
Opening of stretch activated Channels
movement towards the kinocilium, stimulates the opening of the stretch activated channels
- K and Ca enter and depolarize the hair cells
Hair cell releases glutamate
Depolarization- deflection towards the kinocilium
Hyperpolarization- deflection away from the kinocilium
Endolymph
Surrounds Hair Cell Cilia (high in potassium)
Perilymph
Surrounds hair cell body (High in Sodium)
Cupula
Gelatinous mass surrounding cilia, sensitive to angular, but not linear acceleration.
Meniere Disease
-buildup of endolymph in the ear
- Xtreme vertigo, tinnitus, nystagmus, and possible hearing loss
- effects one ear usually
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- detachment of otoconia in the utricle, allowing them to enter the ampulla
Employ Maneuver
Canalith Repositioning Procedure (CRP)
