Cerebellum Flashcards
Cerebellum
- NO DIRECT PATH TO SPINAL CORD
Functions: Sensorimotor integration, coordination, motor learning.
Ataxia: lack of coordination, errors in rate, range, force, direction of movement.
dysdiadochokinesis- inability to make rapidly alternating movements.
Ataxia: lack of coordination, errors in rate, range, force, direction of movement.
dysdiadochokinesis- inability to make rapidly alternating movements.
2 kind of input fibers
Mossy Fibers and Climbing Fibers
Mossy Fibers
Afferent fibers to the cerebellum
(come from the spinal cord and brainstem)
Climbing Fibers
arise from a single nucleus
(Inferior olive of the medulla)
Information Processing
Each afferent fiber sends a branch to the deep nuclei and a branch to the cerebellar cortex.
Cerebellar Cortex: 3 Layers, 5 Cell types
Granule Cells are positive the others are inhibitory
Climbing Fiber input
Complex Spike
Mossy fiber input
Simple Spike
Mossy fiber system (Very Active)
Climbing fiber (Much less frequent) (Frequency increases during motor learning)
