Vertical Separation Flashcards
What is the conventional vertical separation minima?
1,000ft below FL290
2,000ft at FL290 or above
What is the reduced vertical separation minima?
1,000ft below FL410
2,000ft at FL410 or above
What is different about VFR cruising levels?
They are increased by 500ft on IFR levels
What is the maximum ICAO VFR cruising level?
FL285
Should an aircrafts level be changes inside or outside of controlled airspace?
Inside CAS, if possible
If an aircraft is authorised for a cruise-climb, what levels will it be cleared to?
The aircraft will be cleared to operate between two levels or above a level
How should cruising levels be assigned for aircraft operating to the same destination?
In a manner that will be correct for an approach sequence
Who has priority, an aircraft at a level or the aircraft requesting that level?
The aircraft already occupying the level has priority
What are the standard cruising levels assigned to aircraft?
Tracking 000-179 - Odd Levels (NEODD)
Tracking 180-359 Even Levels (SWEVEN)
Then all Odd Levels above FL410, alternating East/West
Describe RVSM
Reduced Vertical Separation Minima enabled by enhanced equipment on aircraft
When should pilots inform ATC if their aircraft is Non-RVSM compliant?
At Initial Call
During all requests for level changes
During all readbacks of level clearances
Should ATCOs acknowledge pilots who state their aircraft are Non-RVSM compliant?
ATCOs shall explicitly acknowledge receipt of a message from a pilot reporting RVSM non-compliant status.
When can an aircraft not be cleared into a level that has been reported vacated?
Severe Turbulence
Higher aircraft is cruise climbing
Differing aircraft performance
