Aerodrome Control Flashcards
What is an Aerodrome Control Tower?
A unit established to provide air traffic control service to aerodrome traffic.
What is aerodrome traffic?
All traffic on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome and all aircraft flying in the vicinity of an aerodrome.
When is an aircraft in the vicinity of an aerodrome?
An aircraft is in the vicinity of an aerodrome when it is in, entering or leaving an aerodrome traffic circuit.
What is Air Traffic at an aerodrome?
All aircraft in flight or operating on the manoeuvring area of an aerodrome.
What is a landing area?
That part of the movement area intended for the landing or take-off of aircraft.
What is the main role of an Aerodrome Control Tower?
Issuing of information and clearances to aircraft under their control to achieve a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic on and in the vicinity of an aerodrome with the object of preventing
collision(s) between:
Aircraft flying within the designated area of responsibility of the control tower, including the aerodrome traffic circuits
Aircraft operating on the manoeuvring area
Aircraft landing and taking off
Aircraft and vehicles operating on the manoeuvring area
Aircraft on the manoeuvring area and obstructions on that area
What are the additional functions of an aerodrome control tower?
Maintain a continuous watch on all flight operations on and in the vicinity of an aerodrome as well as vehicles and personnel on the manoeuvring area.
Maintain a visual watch in low visibility conditions, aided by an ATS surveillance system when available.
Traffic shall be controlled in accordance with local procedures and those specified by the appropriate ATS authority.
Co-ordinate traffic circuits with other aerodromes within a control zone so that they do not conflict.
What are the positions in an Aerodrome Control Tower?
Aerodrome Controller
Ground Controller
Clearance Delivery
Describe essential traffic information
Information on essential local traffic known to the controller shall be transmitted without delay to departing and arriving aircraft concerned.
What shall essential traffic information contain?
Information on any aircraft, vehicle or personnel on or near the manoeuvring area, or traffic operating in the vicinity of the aerodrome, which may constitute a hazard to the aircraft concerned.
What Aerodrome and Meteorological information shall aircraft receive prior to taxiing for takeoff?
The runway to be used
The surface wind direction and speed, including significant variations
QNH and if requested, the QFE
The Air Temperature for the runway to be used
The visibility representative of the direction of takeoff and initial climb
When applicable, the RVR values for the runway to be used
The correct time
What Aerodrome and Meteorological information shall aircraft receive prior to takeoff?
Any significant changes in the surface wind
direction and speed, the air temperature,
and the visibility or RVR value
Significant meteorological conditions in the
take-off and climb-out area, except when it
is known that the information has already
been received by the aircraft.
What Aerodrome and Meteorological information shall aircraft receive prior to entering the circuit or commencing an approach to land?
The runway to be used
The surface wind direction and speed, including significant variations
QNH and if requested, the QFE
