Values in sport Flashcards
What is a value?
En enduring belief that a specific mode of conduct or end-state of existence is personally or socially preferable to an opposite or converse mode of conduct/end-state of existence
How can values be organised?
Can be organised along a continuum or relative importance; can be split into meta-values, which operate as opposing values
What are characteristics of values?
Beliefs linked to emotion; desirable goals or actions; transcend situations; ordered by important; guides to attitudes and behaviour
What is attitude?
A learned predisposition to response in a consistently favourable to unfavourable manner with respect to a given object
What are three sporting context measures of values?
YSVQ, YSVQ-2, and AMD YSQ
What is the YSVQ?
Identified 18 basic/core values; measured by moral dilemmas in sport; moral type values seemed to be highest in importance; a disconnect between frequency or values reported and importance was observed
What is the YSVQ-2?
Identifies moral, competence, and status values. Self-transcendence (moral) opposes self-enhancement (status). Openness to change (competence) opposes conservation (conformity –> moral)
What is the AMDYSQ?
Attitudes to cheating, gamesmanship, keeping winning in proportion
