What is wellbeing?
A key indicator of psychological functioning and positive human health
How do sporting and PA organisations use wellbeing?
Use it as an outcome to measure success
What is hedonic wellbeing?
Is subjective; reflects a person’s individual evaluation of the quality of life; maintains a favourable balance of positive over negative emotions, and experiencing satisfaction with one’s life; characterised by happiness, pleasure, and pain avoidance
What is eudaimonic wellbeing?
Regards self-realisation; living well by flourishing and fulfilling human potential; experiences of growth, meaning, and personal development
What are the six dimensions that constitute optimal eudaimonic wellbein?
Sense of self-acceptance; positive relationship with others; sense of purpose; living with a degree of autonomy; ability to manage one’s environment effectively; growing/progressing towards one’s potential
How might wellbeing for SportsEx be measured?
Qualitative interviews, surveys, psychometric questionnaires
What are psychometric questionnaires?
Questions asked about conditions by people who experience the condition (e.g. depression questions by people who suffer from depression); can find satisfaction with life and subjective happiness
Why is wellbeing hard/ impossible to measure?
Reflects a person’s individual evaluation the quality of their life; quality i defined by whatever criteria are most meaningful or relevant to that individual
How does SportsEx affect depression?
Appears as effective as rug interventions/CBT; some evidence of a preventative role; may be useful for postnatal depression
Why are SportsEx studies biased?
Most studies from Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) societies (aka most of the subjects are uni students)
What does the effect of PA on wellbeing depend on?
Context (e.g. compulsory vs voluntary); extent to which it is personally meaningful; age, gender, race, sexuality etc; how much, how long; injury illness; environment
How does intensity of exercise transiently affect effect on wellbeing?
If really intense, may be more likely to get ill immediately after, which is transiently worse for wellbeing
How does environment affect effect on wellbeing?
Outside exercise seems to have a greater improvement in wellbeing than indoors exercise
How does PA influence social function?
Increases social function, particularly if: already have a medical condition; in a group setting; intervention is provided by medial healthcare
How did the intervention for loneliness influence social functioning?
Helped build friendships, bonds, support; particularly helps ethnically diverse groups to form bonds with the community
