Group leadership Flashcards
Define leadership.
The behavioural process of influencing individuals and groups towards set goals
What coaching behaviours did John Wooden exhibit?
Positive, verbal and non-verbal reinforcement; mistake-contingent encouragement; <15% negative behaviours; numerous comments; tightly organised; detailed individual and group daily planning; continuous learning; not a lot of praise
What coaching behaviours does CBAS measure?
Reactive: reinforcement, mistake-contingent encouragement, mistake-contingent technical instruction, punishment, punitive technical instruction, ignoring mistakes, keeping control. Spontaneous: general technical instruction, general encouragement, organisation, general communication
What are findings of CBAS research?
Most positive outcomes when coaches use reinforcement for effort and performance and responded to mistakes with encouragement and instruction. Children had more fun and liked coaches and teammates most when such coaching behaviours were used
What does the multidimensional model of sport leadership show?
How antecedents of situation, leader, and member characteristics influence leader behaviour to create performance and satisfaction. There are distinctions between required, actual, and preferred leader behaviour, and performance and satisfaction occurs when all three match each other
What does the leadership scale for sports measure?
The extent to which coaches exhibit: training and instruction; democratic behaviour; autocratic behaviour; social support; positive feedback
What did a study of LSS for NCAA players show as behaviours which most satisfy?
Players most satisfied with the coach if they were perceived to give more frequent instruction and positive feedback
