Validity Flashcards
What is validity
The accuracy of measure
Internal validity
Related to what actually happens in a study eg does the independent variable really have an effect on the dependent variable or was it caused by another extraneous variable
External Validity
The extent to which the findings are generalisable beyond the research itself - ecological, population, temporal
Ecological Validity
To test whether the results obtained in an experiment can be extended to a real life setting
Population Validity
When the findings of research from a small sample can be generalised to other types of people
Temporal Validity
The degree to which findings from a research study can be generalised to other time periods
Face Validity
The extent to which a test is subjectively viewed as covering the concept it purports to measure eg does it look like it’s measuring what it’s supposed to measure
Concurrent Validity
The degree to which two different measuring systems produce correlating results. Compare results from an existing valid measure - 0.8 correlation
