Aims and Hypotheses Flashcards
What is an aim?
A general statement of the purpose of the investigation.
What is a hypothesis?
A clear, testable statement that predicts the outcome of the research.
What is a null hypothesis?
Predicts there will be no difference
What is an alternative hypothesis?
Predicts there will be a difference.
What is a directional/one-tailed hypothesis?
A type of alternative hypothesis that predicts the direction of expected results.
What is a non directional/two-tailed hypothesis?
A type of alternative hypothesis that does not predict the direction of expected results.
How do researchers decide whether to use a directional or non-directional hypothesis?
Previous research done = one tailed
No previous research done = two tailed
