Data Analysis - Central Tendancy and Dispersion Flashcards
What is the mean - + strengths and limitations
An average calculated by adding up all the data and dividing by how much there is.
+ representative- takes into account all data
- outliers make it unreliable and misleading
What is the median - + strengths and limitations.
The middle value calculated by putting all of the data into numerical order and finding the middle number.
+ cannot be skewed by outliers
- less representative
What is the mode - + strengths and limitations
Most common number in the data.
+ cannot be skewed
- there isn’t always a mode
What is the range - + strengths and limitations
The highest number minus the lowest number.
+ easy to calculate
- doesn’t take much data into account
- not very useful
What is Standard Deviation - + strengths and limitations
Calculates how much each score differs/ deviates from the mean on average. Low scores = reliable High scores = unreliable
+ includes all values
+ precise
- can be affected by extreme results
