validity Flashcards
validity
Whether an observed effect is genuine (internal – measures what the researcher intended, external – generalised beyond research setting).
ecological validity
Generalising findings from a research study to other settings (especially ‘everyday life’).
temporal validity
Generalising findings/concepts to other eras/timeframes (e.g. Asch, Freud).
two ways assessing validity
face validity, concurrent validity
face validity
Does the test/procedure appear to measure what the researcher intends?
concurrent validity
Similar results are achieved by a new test and a well-established one measuring the same thing.
improving validity
experiments
Use a control group, single-/double-blind procedures and standardised procedures.
