types of data Flashcards
qualitative data
Expressed in words, non-numerical.
quantitative data
expressed numerically rather than in words
primary data
First-hand from participants, collected specifically for the purposes of the research
secondary data
Data collected by someone other than the person doing the research, already exists before the investigation begins.
meta-analysis
A number of research studies that have investigated the same area are reviewed.
effect size
Overall statistical measure of relationship across variables in a meta-analysis.
evaluation qualitative
+ richness in detail that quantity. broader in scope, gives ppt opportunity to fully report thoughts.
greater external validity, more meaningful insight.
- difficult to analyse, not easily summarised statistically, patterns and comparisons hard to identify. rely on subjective interpretations of researcher, biased, preconceptions.
evaluation quantitative
+ simple to analyse, comparisons easily drawn, less biased and objective.
- narrower in meaning and detail, fail to represent real life.
evaluation primary
+ authentic, target specific information that the reasercher requires.
- requires effort and time of researcher, experiments require planning and resources.
evaluation secondary
+ inexpesive and easily accessed requiring minimal effort, desired info already exists, no need for primary.
- may be substatial variation in quality and accuracy of secondary data, outdatded or incomplete, challenges validity.
evaluation meta-analysis
+ create larger more varied sample, generalised results across larger populations, validity
- publication bias, researcher may not select all relevant studies, conclusions always biased only shows some relevant data.
