measures of central tendency and dispersion Flashcards
1
Q
measures of central tendency
A
mean, median, mode
2
Q
measures of dispersion
A
range, standard deviation
3
Q
mean
A
Arithmetic average, add up the scores and divide by number of scores (N).
Can be distorted by an extreme value.
4
Q
median
A
Middle value when scores are arranged in order.
Less sensitive than the mean.
5
Q
mode
A
Most frequently occurring value.
Can be quite unrepresentative of the data set as a whole
6
Q
range
A
Difference between the highest and lowest value plus 1.
Does not include all the scores in its calculation.
7
Q
standard deviation
A
The average that scores deviate (move away from) the mean.
Can be distorted by extreme values.
