correlations Flashcards
correlations
A correlation is plotted on a scattergram and tells us the strength and direction of a relationship between two or more co-variables.
types of correlation
Positive (two variables rise or fall together) or negative (one variable rises and the other falls).
Zero correlation is when there is no relationship between the variables
strength of correlations
useful preliminary tool for research. by assessing strenght and direction of a relationship, provide precise quantifiable measure.
helps inform future research, used as starting point.
quick and economical to carry out, no need for controlled environment, data collected by others, less time.
correlations vs experiments
No IV or DV in a correlation (just co-variables).
Cause-and-effect relationships cannot be established.
limitations of correlations
dont explain why variables are related, no cause and effect relationship, dk which variable is the cause. establishing direction is issue.
could be intervening variable casuing relationship, third V problem.
can be misused or misinterpreted, sometimes presented as casual when they aren’t esp by the media.
correlation coefficient
Number between –1 and +1 that indicates the strength and direction of correlation.
