vaccines Flashcards
what do vaccines contain?
non-infectious virus particles
how do vaccines affect the body?
the body reacts and makes antibodies, and can then fight against the real virus
how vaccines work
what does the vaccine create against the virus and what is its effect?
a wall; breaks path of transmission
how vaccines work
how is the virus affected once the path of transmission is broken?
cannot infect cells
cannot make copies of itself
virus cannot infect other hosts
what is herd immunity?
if most members of a population are vaccinated, individuals who are not vaccinated (due to allergies, religion, etc) are also protected
why do many parents not vaccinate?
they are scared
why can antibodies not be used to fight viruses?
they attack organelles- viruses do not have organelles
how do anti-viral drugs work?
prevent attachment to host cell
blocks entry to host cell
how is biotechnology used to fight viruses?
used to transport a “gene of interest” into a host cell’s genome, using viruses as vectors
