Hyposplenism, by whatever mechanism it occurs dramatically increases the risk of post-splenectomy sepsis, particularly with encapsulated organisms

what is recommended for those with hyposplenism ?
A
prior or post splenectomy vaccinated
post abx prophylaxis

what vaccines should be offered those with hyposplenism ?
A
receive pneumococcal, Haemophilus type b and meningococcal type C and b vaccines - 2 weeks prior to splenectomy or two weeks following splenectomy
Annual influenza vaccination is recommended in all case

High-risk individuals should be counselled to take which abx?
A
penicillin or macrolide prophylaxis
Penicillin V 500mg BD or amoxicillin 250mg BD
