ITP Flashcards
Patho etiology if ITP?
immune-mediated reduction in the platelet count. Antibodies are directed against the glycoprotein IIb/IIIa or Ib-V-IX complex.
ITP presentation
may present with
petechiae, purpura
bleeding (e.g. epistaxis)
catastrophic bleeding (e.g. intracranial) is not a common presentation
Children with ITP usually have an acute thrombocytopenia that may follow infection or vaccination
Diagnosis of ITP?
isolated thrombocytopenia
bone marrow examination is no longer used routinely
Management of ITP
Emergency treatment: life-threatening or organ threatening bleeding :- Platelet transfusion, IV methylprednisolone and intravenous immunoglobulin
Platelet count <30*109/L - oral prednisone
Platelet count >30*109/L - observation
What is evans syndrome in ITP
ITP in association with autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA)
