Traditional White Breeds:
- Landrace
- Yorkshire
- Chester White
white, long body (with extra vertebra), large, drooped ears, noted for prolificacy, good mothering, feed conversion
Landrace
Large White — the mother breed
White, dished face, erect ears, excellent mothering ability, large litter size, high feed efficiency
Yorkshire
white, drooped ears, prolific, good mothering, good carcass quality
Chester White
Traditional “Colored” Breeds:
- Duroc
- Tamworth
- Berkshire
- Poland China
- Hampshire
- Spotted
eddish to cherry red color, drooped ears. Excellent rate of gain, High FCE, high carcass quality
Duroc
light to dark red color, long legs, excellent mothers, noted for its bacon type with long trim, smooth sides of the carcass
Tamworth
Black with 6 points (at 4 feet, face, tail switch), erect ears, dished, excellent meat type, long body, high carcass quality
Berkshire
black with 6 white points (same as Berkshire), drooped ears, noted for heavy ham carcass, low backfat, good weight gain
Poland China
black with white belt around the shoulders and front legs, erect ears, high muscling and carcass leanness (low backfat), long carcass
Hampshire
large black and white spots, drooped ears, good muscling, high efficiency and gain
Spotted
Less popular Breeds:
- Hereford
- Pietrain
- Native pig (predominantly black, long face/snout, short and low-set body-belly almost touching ground, erect ears)
- Synthetic Breeds (hybrid strains with outstanding performances but with no distinguishing physical traits
Examples: Babcock, Cotswold, Hypor, Seghers

Known as the large and middle whites in England
Called “mother breed” because its mothering ability is exceptionally good
Developed in Yorkshire and adjacent countries in Northern England
