UW revision Lateral epicondylitis 12-26 (1) Flashcards
CP? 3
Lateral elbow pain
Hx of repetitive or forceful risk extension
Peak age 45-54
Dx. Where tenderness?
Tenderness at epicondyle and proximal extensor muscles
Dx. Pain? 2
Pain with resisted wrist extension or supination
Pain with passive wrist flexion.
Mx? 2
Activity modification + Inelastic counterforce brace
Pathophysiology?
Repetitive, forceful overuse of wrist and digit extensors
Angiofibroblastic tendinosis of extensor tendons at lateral epicondyle
CP (other table). Pain onset.
Insidious pain, onset weeks to months
CP (other table). Pain location?
Pain 1 cm distal to lateral epicondyle
Pain elicited by resisted wrist extension and passive wrist flexion
How is Dx made?
Clinical findings
When do UG?
for doubtful cases
Tx of refractory symtpoms?
NSAIDs (short term), corticosteroids injection, surgery
LE is degenerative tendinopathy rather than inflammatory, therefore nsaids can be used in addition to primary Mx, but their effect is uncertain
how lateral epicondylitis is called?
tennis elbow
Surgery - can be considered for patients with prolonged (>6 months) severe symptoms, but ir rarely necessary
Corticosteroid injection can be used for short term, but does not provide long term. also no oral due to systemic effects
LE due to overuse of wrist extensors
