- the persistent presence of bacteria within
the urinary tract of women who have no
symptoms - usually present in pregnant women
Asymptomatic Bacteriuria
Asymptomatic Bacteriuria Dx and Tx:
1.) clean-voided urine specimen containing more
than ______ colonies per milliliter
2.) Single-dose or 3-. 7-, & 10-day treatment of _______ and ______Therapy
1.) 100,000
2.) Antibiotics
3.) Suppressive
-dysuria
- urgency & frequency of urination
- lower abdominal or suprapubic pain
- microscopic or gross hematuria may also be present
Cystitis
Cystitis Treatment:
Antibiotic Therapy or Urinary Analgesic
- renal/kidney infection
- usually caused by the E. coli organism
- develops only in the right kidney in
more than half of all cases - the most common serious medical
complication of pregnancy - the leading cause of septic shock during
pregnancy
Pyelonephritis
Pyelonephritis Treatment
1.) IV (Ceftriaxone) and Oral (Bactrim DS) antibiotics
2.) Gentamicin or Aztreonam
3.) Prophylactic Antibiotic
Health Teaching:
- Teach pregnant women about taking medications
safely & effectively. - Finish the entire course of prescribed
antibiotic therapy
-Take antibiotics on time & around the clock
Reminders for Patient:
-Voiding frequently (at least every 2 hours)
-Developing a habit of urinating as soon as the need is felt & emptying the bladder completely when urinating
-Wiping front to back after voiding & bowel movements
-Wearing cotton, not synthetic fiber, underwear
-Voiding immediately after sexual intercourse
-Drinking a glass of cranberry juice daily
