Urinary Flashcards
Kidney
1 of 2 bean-shaped organs that remove waste products from blood and help maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in body
Nephron
microscopic urine-producing unit; each kidney contains about 1 million nephrons (Each of your kidneys is made up of about a million filtering units called nephrons. Each nephron includes a filter, called the glomerulus, and a tubule. The nephrons work through a two-step process: the glomerulus filters your blood, and the tubule returns needed substances to your blood and removes wastes)
Glomerulus
1 of several capillary clusters at the entrance of each nephron that initiates the process of filtering blood
Renal pelvis
reservoir in each kidney that collects urine
Ureter
one of 2 narrow tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to bladder
Urethra
tubular structure through which urine passes from the bladder to outside body
Urinary bladder
muscular organ that holds the urine until it is released
Urinary meatus
opening that carries urine from urethra to outside body
