Urinalysis: Basics Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 4 parts of the urinary system?
A
- kidney
- ureters
- urinary bladder
- urethra
2
Q
What are the 3 functions of the kidney?
A
- eliminates metabolic wastes from the body
- maintains normal levels of body electrolytes and essential organic molecules
- produces important hormones
3
Q
What are the hormones that the kidney produces? (3)
A
- renin
- erythropoietin
- active vitamin D3
4
Q
What are the 3 renal functions?
A
- glomerular filtration
- reabsorption
- excretion
5
Q
How does Glomerular Filtration work? (3)
A
- Filtration of blood
- Driven by high blood pressure
- Permitted by semipermeable capillary membrane
6
Q
What does the semipermeable capillary membrane do?
A
Allows passage of water and dissolved solutes of low molecular weight
7
Q
How does reabsorption work? (2)
A
- The majority of small molecules in the glomerular filtrate are reabsorbed before they exit the body in urine
- ~90% of filtered molecules are reabsorbed in the renal tubule
8
Q
How does excretion work?
A
Some molecules are excreted into the glomerular filtrate as it moves through the renal tubule
