What is a necropsy?
Postmortem examination of an animal’s body
How is a necropsy an important diagnostic tool?
Often practiced to help determine cause of death in animals dying for unknown reasons
When should you do a necropsy?
Perform necropsy immediately after death before autolysis begins
What is the standard equipment used in a necropsy? (4)
- Necropsy knife
- Sterile surgical instruments (scalpel, thumb forceps)
- Specimen collection containers (sterile bags, formalin jars)
- Bone shears
How should you place the animal for a necropsy?
Place animal in dorsal/left lateral/right lateral recumbency
Where do you make the first incision?
Make midline skin incision from the lips to the pelvis
What do you do after the first incision? (5)
- Reflect the skin from the underlying musculature
- Cut ventral muscular attachment of limbs to splay them out
- Cut open the abdomen
- Cut open the thorax
- Remove the internal organs
What should you do when collecting a sample for a culture?
follow aseptic technique
What should you do when collecting a sample for histology?
Place in formalin, 1:10 ratio
What should you do when collecting a sample for toxicology?
Choose appropriate ones
What do you need to do for a submission of collected specimens? (3)
- Cool tissues before shipping
- Postal Service regulations require a leakproof container for mailing
- Send by courier for delivery to diagnostic lab as soon as possible
