A
Caused by a bacteria maintained in rodent populations

What are the symptoms/syndrome of the plague in animals?

- Rodents become ill and die
- Cats may develop fever, dyspnea, nasal discharge, swollen lymph nodes
- Septicemia

How is the plague transmitted?

- Bite of an infected rodent flea
- Handling tissues or fluids of infected animals
- Inhalation of airborne bacteria from cats or humans with pulmonary disease

How is the plague diagnosed?

- Culture of lymph node aspirate
- Blood test
- Sputum test
- Cerebrospinal fluid aspirate

How is the plague treated?
A
Antibiotics (penicillin)

How is the plague controlled and prevented?

- Prevent human contact with wild rodents
- Use insecticides/repellents when entering wildlife habitats
- Wear gloves when hunting or handling wildlife
- Keep dogs and cats from hunting wild rodents
- Vaccinate individuals at risk
