Plasma Proteins Flashcards
How many plasma proteins are produced in the body?
over 200
What are the functions of the plasma proteins? (4)
- part of the structural matrix of cells
- enzymes
- hormones
- antibodies
What are the 3 most important and largest plasma proteins?
- Albumin
- Globulins
- Fibrinogen
What is “total plasma protein”?
all plasma proteins added together
What do “total plasma proteins” tell us?
good indicator of over all health
What does a high total plasma protein level tell us?
can be high with chronic inflammation or infection
What causes fibrinogen levels to increase?
inflammation
What causes gamma globulins to increase?
infection
What does a low total plasma protein level tell us?
can be low with liver disease
Albumin
What is it and what does it do?) (3
- An important protein produced by hepatocytes
- Makes up 35-50% of total plasma protein level
- Mostly used to transport things
Globulins
What are they and what do they do?) (3
- Second largest plasma protein fraction
- Produced in the liver and by B-lymphocytes
- Globulins have various functions
What do increased levels of globulin indicate? (3)
- infection
- chronic inflammation
- neoplasia
Where is fibrinogen produced?
in the liver
What does fibrinogen do?
involved in blood clot formation
Fibrinogen —> Fibrin
How can you measure fibrinogen levels?
Measure in clinic by heating a microhematocrit tube to precipitate fibrinogen
