The growth in the proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas
Where is urbanisation currently fastest growing?
In poorer countries
What is rural-urban migration?
The movement of people from the countryside to the cities
What may people in LEDC’s move from rural areas to cities?
There may be a shortage of services such as access to education and water in rural areas
There are more job opportunities in urban areas
Why may people in MEDC’s move from rural areas to cities?
Most urbanisation in these country’s occurred during the industrial revolution when machinery replaced farm labourers so people move to towns for work
Why does the fact it’s mainly young people moving to the cities increase urbanisation?
They often have children in cities which increases the proportion of the population living in urban areas
