Plate Boundaries Flashcards
What is a destructive plate margin?
Where oceanic and continental plates move towards each other
What is created at a destructive plate boundary?
Fold mountains
Volcanos
Earthquakes
Tsunamis
What happens at a destructive plate margin?
Denser oceanic plate is forced down into mantle (subducts) where it’s destroyed
Subduction forms a deep part of ocean known as a trench
What is an ocean trench?
They mark where one plate begins to descend beneath the other , deep part of ocean
What is a constructive plate margin?
When two plates move apart
What are formed at constructive plate boundaries?
Volcanos
Earthquakes
What happens at a constructive margin?
Magma rises to fill gap where plates have moved apart which then cools and new crust is created
What is a conservative plate margin?
When two plates move sideways past each other or in the sane direction and different speeds
What is created at a conservative margin?
Earthquake
What happens at a conservative plate boundary?
Crust isn’t created or destroyed
Name an example of a constructive boundary?
Mid-Atlantic ridge
Name an example of conservative margin?
San Andreas
Name an example of a destructive margin?
Pacific-Eurasian plate margin
What is a collision margin?
When continental meets continental
What is formed at a Collision margin?
Fold mountains
