What do population pyramids show?
The age and gender of a population
Why are population pyramids useful?
They can be used for planning for the future e.g. Schools, hospitals, care homes
They can enable comparisons to be made between countries
They help plan for future service needs such as old people’s homes if population is ageing
What does the slope of a pyramid indicate?
The death rate
What does the width of the base show? Yeh
The birth/ fertility rate
What does the height of a pyramid indicate?
The life expectancy
What do kinks in the graph represent?
Dramatic reductions in birth rate or increase in death rate
What does the total area of the pyramid show?
Total population
What are over 60’a called?
Old dependants
What are under 20’s called?
Young dependants
What are 20-60 year olds called?
Economically active
