When did it take place?
16th August 2004
What were the immediate responses?
RAF and coast guards sent seven helicopters to rescue those trapped in cars and on roofs
120 people air lifted to safety
Up to 1000 people evacuated
What were the long term responses?
Government promised funding for clear up of area
Clean up bill was estimated millions
Man made culverts widened to allow more water to flow easily to river valency
Why did the flood occur?
Steep slopes
River joining
Heavy rainfall
What were the short term effects?
Six buildings and one bridge collapsed
50 cars washed away (30 from car park)
Uprooted trees piled up 30ft high against buildings
What were the long term effects?
Many buildings totally ruined by flood waters
The village is reliant on tourism
