What are urban renewal schemes?
Government strategies (first used in 1990’s)
They encourage investment in new housing Services and employment inner cities
How are new towns tackling the shortage of housing problem?
New towns have been built to house overspill populations for existing places with shortage of housing
What are relocation incentives?
Used to encourage people living in large council houses to move out of urban areas to free up urban houses for people who need it eg working families
Why are CBD’s in some cities becoming run down?
Out of town shopping centre and business parks which have cheaper rent and are easier to get to
What attempts are being made to revitalise the CBD and attract people back to them?
Pedestrianising areas to make them safer nicer for shoppers
Improving access with better public transport routes and car parks
Converting derelict buildings into new facilities
Making public areas like squares more attractive
What problems stem from increased cars in cities?
More air pollution , damages health
Air pollution may damage buildings
More road accidents
More traffic jams and congestion

Improving public transport will encourage people to use it which reduces traffic congestion air pollution and traffic jams

Bus priority lanes,faster

What is ethnic segregation?
People of different ethnicities not mixing
What are the reasons for ethnic segregation?
People prefer to live near those with the same background religion and language
People live near services important to their city their culture eg places of worship
People believe in safety in numbers
What are the strategies to support the multicultural nature of urban areas?
Making sure everyone can access different services eg printing leaflets in variety of languages
Improving communication between all parts of community eg involving leaders of different ethnic communities in decision making
Providing interpreters in places like hospitals
Ensure there are suitable services for different culture
