Urban KQ3 Flashcards
Explain water and sanitation issues?
Water is normally very polluted in cities due to industry, storm drains and household waste.
Around 25% of Latin A is not connected to a sewage system sometimes 1 toilet is for 100’s of people
Up to 10% of disease in LEDCS is caused by contaminated water
Explain atmospheric pollution?
From burnt fossil fuels from cars or industry
In Delhi and MC residents exceed WHO guidelines by 3X
Leading to a 1-2 year shorter life span
Particulate matter - most responsible for health problems like lung and heart disease = coming from industry, agriculture and construction
Sulphur Dioxide - emitted from burning coal can be bad for health
CS of MC and its issues with traffic congestion, atmospheric pollution and water/sanitation and waste?
The situation being surrounded by mountains traps pollution and causes a smog due to the cool air meeting the warmer inversion layer.
300 deaths annually from air pollution.
MC is located above a confined aquifer up to 800m thick only input is from precipitation, 30% of their water supply is leaked through cracked pipes, most garbage ends up in the river systems which contaminates the water.
How many people have health problems due to pollution in MC?
3000 die
200,000 people suffer from chronic lung disease
What is the problem with the underground aquifer in MC?
This is 75% of their supply meaning that it will one day run out and there is little to no natural rivers left.
What is a environmental issue in MC?
Near by volcanoes may explode and due to no mitigation or preparation schemes there would be significant loss of life due to ash descending on them injuring millions and the lack of emergency services = even more deaths
What is the problem with Bangladesh and its water connections?
It would take up to 2018 and 65,000 homes per month to supply 99% of their dwellers with water.
