Energy KQ4 Flashcards
State some examples of sustainable energy production?
3GD - HEP
Mojave Desert, California - Solar
Coast of Kent, England - Wind
Jatropha grown in Mali - Biomass
What are the advantages of sustainable energy production?
Replaced easily and quickly No GHG Tourist attraction Reduce landfill sites (biomass) Cost effective Earn money from it - selling back to the national grid (solar)
What is the England’s goal by 2020?
To have 15% of energy produced by renewables Currently at 7%
How many offshore wind turbines does England have?
750 but potential for 5000-7000
How many homes does wind energy currently provide energy for?
Around 4.4 million (both off and on shore)
What is Thanet Wind Farm?
Opened in Sept 2010 and is the worlds BIGGEST off shore wind farm
100 turbines create electricity for 200,000 homes
Cost £800 million
What are the in favour opinions of Thanet Wind Farm?
Wind is infinite
Creates 3600 jobs directly and could provide 34,000
No air pollution or GHG
Decrease reliance on FF
What are the against opinions of Thanet Wind Farm?
It needs backing up by other sources
Only have a 25 year life span
Cant provide power for most forms of transport
Doesn’t provide many jobs for local people (only 3% of Thanet)
They are expensive
Some people feel that they are unattractive and ruin their view
State some examples of economic sustainability of Thanet Wind Farm (TWF)?
More turbines to built 5000-7000
Decreases reliance on imports
£800 million for 100 turbines - worth it?
State some examples of social sustainability of TWF?
Providing a possible 34,000 jobs
Plans to provide 10% of UK by 2016
Employment creates a skilled group of workforce - future employment in engineering
State some examples of environmental sustainability of TWF?
Reduces reliance on FF
Doesn’t produce GHG
Minimal impact on ecosystems
Explain some background information on California?
Had 36.5 million residents in 2007
Has over 26 million vehicles releasing 40 million tonnes of CO2 p/a
What is California’s new target for their GHG emissions?
Reduce it by 80%
State a way that California is improving their energy?
Wind - 14,000 turbines were installed (only supplies 1.5%)
increase this to 1000MW in future
Solar - only supplies 1% at the moment - 9 solar power stations have been installed - Solar initiative invested $3.2 million
Educating people on how to use their energy efficiently and installing LED lights as well as tighter laws on vehicle usage
