Rural KQ2 Flashcards
What is the CPRE and their purposes?
Council for the Protection of Rural England…
Check unrestricted sprawl of large built up areas
Prevent neighbouring towns from merging
Assist the safeguarding of countryside from encroachment
Preserve the setting and special character of historic towns
Assist urban regeneration by encouraging recycling of derelict land and other urban land - land around the Cambridge rail station.
What have been the main problems for the growth outside of Cambridge?
Shortage if affordable housing in both the city and surrounding villages.
Severe traffic congestion - over half of people that work in Cambridge live outside the city and 33% of people in S.Cambs commute.
Change in character of the villages due to unsightly developments and issues to whether doctors/schools can cope with new population.
What are the issues associated with Urban Sprawl?
Restrictive greenbelts.
Few brownfield sites restricting the growth and development needed in the city.
Forcing pressure on green belts for new housing, developments due to growing science park and economy.
What are the issues associated with Demand for New Housing?
60% growth between 1976 and 2016.
Encouraging in migration of young families due to economic growth.
Increase demand for housing = higher prices - making it too expensive for the skilled workers to move.
Meaning the creation of new villages like Cambourne 3,600 new homes, and the expansion of existing villages like Cottenham (better transport links with good schools and facilities).
This all has a bad impact on the environment and increases car journeys due to commuting.
What are the issues associated with Industrial growth and urban serives?
Science park - 60 companies employing over 5000 people and increasing.
Similar business park is going to be developed in Cambourne.
Employment grows significantly growing than the country.
Increasing the population - increasing the demand for services, retail ma infrastructure, water treatment plants and recycling plants.
What are the issues associated with Urban Transport and infrastructure?
Improved transport links - roads and trains linking to other cities.
Transport within city is congested due to 78% of people commuting to work and their public transport is insufficient to meet the demand.
Improvements for this is… The guided bus, an access road for addenbrooks and a new park and ride north of the city.
What are the issues associated with Service development?
Increasing population = development of retail parks and supermarkets out of town.
Speed of development has outstripped the services - Cambourne and their 3 temporary primary schools.
New warehouse for recycling near addenbrookes to be built.
What are the issues associated with Recreation pressures?
Cambridgeshire only has 50% of the normal amount of publicly available countryside.
Population and recreational space has not grown together.
Wicken fen is the proposed solution - 53km squared nature reserve.
What are the issues with the Wicken Fen development?
Parking and congestion in near by villages
Loss of farmland
Cost
Risk of malaria due to large wetland
Access rights and problems with herds of cattle and ponies
Problems with increased visitors
