Increased numbers of older people
Declining numbers of younger people - migration - projections
What are some employment related changes that rural areas have experienced recently?
Increasing amount of commuters = higher incomes
Elderly are providing income through part time jobs
What are some services related changes that rural areas have experienced recently?
More services like post offices are shutting down due to lack of funding
Leading to villages becoming isolated and desolate
What are some transport related changes that rural areas have experienced recently?
Isolated due to lack of accessibility
Hard for people with low incomes or the elderly
Bus services also are being cut

Not as close a community as before
Elderly are running majority community events = time dependent

Define the term “site”?
Actual land that a settlement has been built on.
Dfine the term “situation”?
The location of a settlement in relation to the features surrounding the settlement
State some reasons for the site being originally placed there?
Dry point - no flood hazards
Wet point - water supply = agricultural
Hill-top - more easily defended
State some reasons for the situation of the settlement originally?

Woodland - providing building material and habitat for hunting
Castle - defence purposes
Soil type/slopes - better for agriculture and would be a prime situation
Define “nucleated settlement pattern”?
Dominated by villages in close proximity.
Define “dispersed settlement pattern”?
Hamlets and isolated farms not in close proximity.
State some functions of rural areas?
Residential use Mining / quarrying Forestry Energy production Recreation / leisure e.g. National Parks Military bases / training grounds
Explain economic opportunities or factors in rural areas?
Close proximity to the economic core of the region or country eg London - creating more jobs and attracting tourists.
Good accessibility to near by towns or cities - people can commute to work fast and the area may gain more investment for the close proximity S. Cambs with all the medical campuses.
Modern IT communication links.
Explain physical opportunities or factors in rural areas?
Temperate climate and fertile soils (e.g. Fens) can be used for successful agriculture that may supply supermarkets etc.
Areas with attractive landscapes- increase visitor numbers for recreational purposes.
Natural resources available e.g. Minerals, forests or water.
Explain social/cultural opportunities or factors in rural areas?
Media/film/TV representing rural areas in a “golden view” encouraging people to move there.
Sites of cultural/historical importance such as world heritage site or national trust.
Explain political opportunities or factors in rural areas?
EU regional development funding - money given to declining areas or low income areas and the funding is used to improve accessibility and encourage tourism and recreation.
Relaxed planning controls for example the release of green belt land around Cambridge due to rapid population growth creating a cycle of new jobs and more pop. growth.
Explain the 3types of rural change?
Rural growth - through population increase a village may grow on the periphery = South Cambs - Cottenham & Cambourne.
Extreme decline = population decrease due to economic changes, decline in resources, overworking of land.
Rural change = different places are seeing decline and growth within the same area - NN.
Reasons for rural growth?
Increased standards of living with higher incomes - can afford to commute and live in the country.
Increasing housing needs.
Dissatisfaction of urban living.
Increase in number of cars so people can drive to work in a commutable distance.
Improved technology meaning people can work from home.
Urban sprawl.
