Urban KQ1 Flashcards
Define “urbanisation”?
The physical growth of urban areas, as well as the creation of new towns or cities or a change in a settlements characteristics.
Name some criteria for urban areas?
Size of population/density of population.
Extensive area of built up/developed land.
Dominance in Secondary/Tertiary rather than Primary.
State some characteristics of urbanisation?
In MEDCS = slow growth, not popular, built by construction firms and very expensive as planned
In LEDCS = rapid growth, unplanned, built by individuals, creates all kinds of issues like lack of security or waste collection and they are poorly organised and managed.
What is the MEDC to LEDC shift?
Urbanisation used to happen within MEDCS whereas now its happening increasingly in LEDCS.
What is the rural to urban shift?
The majority of people will in the future live in their urban areas due to rapid population increase.
What is the shift in size?
Increasing populations has lead to increasing sizes in areas, there are 17 cities with populations greater than 10 million and 20 cities between 5-10 million.
Where are the majority of mega cities found?
In LEDCS due to lack of planning laws and rapid population growth.
CS of Manilla?
Capital of the Philippines - average pop growth of 3% per year - 20 million people in 2011 - 250,000 arrive from the rural areas
What are the reasons for the growth in Manilla?
HBR - lack of contraception
Catholicism - politician cant really promote contraception
Old age security
In migration from Mindanao etc (economic migrants)
What are the problems with the growth in Manilla?
Overcrowding in maternity hospitals
Vulnerable to flooding from monsoons as settlements virtually on beach
Education standards are poor
High levels of congestion
Lack of housing so unplanned settlements are taking over
Factors that influence land use patterns are?
Relief - heavy industry needs flat land for factories but so does good quality housing
Planning rules - govt has dict control so can over write a rule by granting or denying planning permission for houses or infrastructure
De-industrialisation - many areas have experienced this eg London Docklands or Newcastle - govt offering incentives to developers to invest
Ethnicity - people of certain ethnic groups may congregate in certain areas - due to discrimination or wanting to live near family
Explain the influence of the physical environment on its land use?
Cambridge - developed on the meander of the Rive Cam - with flood plains that help protect the city during flood events. The east and south east of the city has good quality land = agriculture its also very flat meaning there is an airport situated there. Market square shows historical impact for surrounding agricultural towns and villages.
State some factors that have influenced the land use pattern in Cambridge?
Historical - uni in the centre and the city has grown around this
Economic - west of city = expensive, parts round station = workers still like this now
Social - the core has been preserved for uni students whereas the outskirts are more family orientated
Political - the greenbelt has prevented outwards growth and encouraged the redevelopment of brownfield sites.
