ASIS
anterior superior iliac spine, attaches to inguinal ligament
ischeal tuberosity
of the ischeum, sit on it

socket of the ball and socket joint of the hip
pubic tebercle
most posterior part of the pubis
inguinal ligament
connects ASIS to pubic tubericle, boundary of lower abdomen and upper thigh
aponeurosis of external oblique
lower edge forms the inguinal ligament
obturator foramen
space between pubis and ischium
linea aspera
attachment point of adductor muscles of femur, on posterior side
condyles
knuckle like projections at the end of the shaft of the femur
greater and lesser trochanter
protrusions on the femur
lesser - medially and inferiorly
tibia, fibula
tibia, longer bears the weight
fibula = smaller, more posterior
medial malleolus
medial part of the ankle, part of tibia
lateral malleolus
lateral part of the ankle, part of the fibula
intertrochanteric crest
connects greater and lesser trochanter of the femur
great saphenous vein
runs from medial side up foot, up behind knee joint and continues medially to the hip, goes through fasica lata, empties into femoral vein
anterior compartment of the thigh
quadricep muscles and sartorious, involved in flexing the thigh at the hip joint and extending the leg at the knee joint, supplied by femoral nerve
medial compartment of the thigh
adductor group, bring thigh in towards midline, supplied by obturator nerve
posterior compartment of the thigh
hamstring muscles, flexing the leg at the knee joint, supplied by tibial division of the sciatic nerve
psoas major
originates from lateral part of lumbar vertebrae and runs to lower part of the abdomen
Iliacus muscle
joins the psoas major, occupies ilieac fossa
iliopsoas muscle
combination of psoas major and iliacus muscle, crosses hip joint from anterior aspect and inserts on lesser trochanter of the femur
pectineus muscle
originates at superior ramus of the pubis and inserts on the femur right below the lesser trochanter, helps to flex the hip joint but can also adduct the hip (2 functions)
four heads of the quadricep muscle
vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, and rectus femoris, only rectus crosses the hip joint, extends the leg at the knee joint
rectus femoris
crosses both hip and knee joint, can flex the thigh at the hip joint and extend the leg at the knee joint
sartorious
originates on ASIS, crosses thigh lateral to medial, inserts in tibia, can help to flex the thigh at the hip joint, abduct, and flex the leg at the knee joint
How does the quadricep tendon get stabilized at the knee?
sits between the vastus medialis and vastus lateralus (problem = runners knee)
iliotibial tract
thick part of the fasica lata, extends down lateral part of the thigh and crosses knee joint and inserts on the tibia, braces the knee for balance, pulled up by tensor fasica lata and gluteus maximus
femoral sheath
surrounds femoral artery, vein and lymphatics (does not contain femoral nerve)
branching of femoral artery
splits to deep and superficial femoral artery
deep femoral artery
gives of branches that are the main supply of muscles of the thigh (medial/lateral femoral circumflex)
superficial femoral artery
goes through gap in the abductor magnus and goes behind knee and becomes popliteal artery
adductor longus
originates on pubic bone and inserts on linea aspera
gracilis
originates at pubis, runs on medial side of thigh, crosses knee joint, inserts near sartorious tendon, adductor, but not a major player
adductor brevis
more posterior, adducts at the hip
adductor magnus
largest adductor muscle of the hip, has two nerves (horizontal = obturator, vertical = sciatic)
nerve that supplies quadricep muscles
femoral nerve
nerve that supplies adductor muscles
obturator nerve
dorsal primary ramus
provide innervation to back muscles and sensations of the back, dont form plexus
