universal design for learning Flashcards
what is the universal design for learning (UDL)
can be applied to any teaching setting
- how to improve and optimise how people learn
- how is the environment set up for people to be successful
LEARNER centred
what is the difference between teacher and student centred
- teacher centred does not mean bad
(some cases require this (med school, lectures, etc)) - problem is when it’s only teacher directed
- student directed is much better when talking about application of learning (active learning)
what are the 4 different elements of the learning environment
director
- lecture style - assess knowledge on teacher outcomes
leading learner
- treated as partnership between student and teacher
- more opportunities for feedback and conversation
- assessments used to see where challenges are
facilitator
- async classes - self directed learning
- teacher is more of a resource
nurturer
- foster excitement and motivation around the topic
- tries to make students feel connected
- values participation
what are the 3 variants of learners
affective networks - the why of learning
- what they find motivating
recognition networks - the what of learning
- how they process and take in info
- how they interpret the info
strategic networks - the how of learning
- how learners demonstrate learning
what is involved in multiple means of engagement
how the student is interacting with the environment and content
- offer choice - what to do/use (STEP)
- drive motivation and interest
- equipment, force / distance, task variation, pace of progression
- equal opportunities to perform regardless of skill level
what is involved in mutiple means of representation
how students access the material and how instructions are delivered
- accessible info - multiple ways to understand the info we’re trying to give them
- reading level
- use of peer buddies (one with and one without disability)
- cues/key words
what is involved in multiple means of action and expression
demonstration of knowledge and understanding
(if we don’t assess at all - no challenge to improve, or see if there are difficulties)
- many different ways to assess knowledge
- base assessment off of the options provided to the person
what is PE currently like for kids with disabilities
not meeting inclusion needs
current inclusion rating scale (liberman-brian inclusion rating scale)
- allows complacency (only need to be thinking about 3 out of 30 practises)
