A

1619: Every male settler in Jamestown, Virginia ordered to plant and tend to a minimum of 10 grapevines. This is the earliest recording of vitis vinifera on the East Coast. Ended in failure, due to foreign vines succoming to vine disease and phylloxera. Interest in winemaking in British colonies dwindled.
