To identify or point out a noun (this/these, that/those), use these demonstrative adjective BEFORE the noun:
- ce (m.) (s.)
- cet (m.) (before a vowel)
- cette (f.) (s.) (before a vowel)
- ces (m.) (f.) (pl.)
Ex. Ce café.
This coffee.
Ex. Ces cafés.
These coffees.
Ex. Cet éclair.
This éclair.
Ex. Ces éclairs.
These éclairs.
Ex. Cette surprise.
This surprise.
Ex. Ces surprises.
These surprises.
Ex. Cette amie.
This friend.
Ex. Ces amies.
These friends.
Ex. Je préfère ces cadeux.
I prefer those gifts.
Ce copain organise une fête.
This friend is organizing a party.
Cette hôpital est trop loin du centre-ville.
That hospital is too far from downtown.
Cette glace est excellente.
This ice cream is excellent.
Combien coûte cette montre?
How much is this watch?
J’ai ce cadeau pour Stephane.
I have this gift for Stephane.
Joël préfère cet éclair.
Joël prefers that éclair.
Ils vont aimer cette surprise.
They’re going to like this surprise.
Ces glaçons sont pour la limonade.
Those ice cubes are for the lemon soda.
–là
Refers to nouns that are FAR.
Simply add –là to the end of the noun.
- ce ____-là
that ____ (there/over there)
- ces ____-là
those _____ (there/over there)
Ex. Ces couple-là.
That couple (there/over there).
Ex. Cette invitée-là.
That guest (there/over there).
–ci
Refers to something that is VERY CLOSE, or VERY NEAR.
Simply add –ci to the end of the noun.
Ex. Ce couple-ci.
This couple (here).
Ex. Ces biscuits-ci.
These cookies (here).
–ci and –là
together
Use –ci and –là to contrast SIMILAR items.
Ex. Nous prenons cette glace-ci, pas cette glace-là.
We’ll have this ice cream, not that ice cream.
Ex. Tu achètes ce fromage-ci ou ce fromage-là?
Are you buying this cheese or that cheese?
J’aime bien cette jupe-ci.
I like this skirt.
Je n’aime pas ces chaussures-là.
I don’t like those shoes.
