Q

How can you guess the gender of a noun?

A

By how the noun ends.

  • Nouns ending in —eau, —isme or —ment = MASCULINE.
  • Nouns ending in —ence, —ion, —ie, —ure, —té = FEMININE.

Also, by knowing the article in front of the noun.

  • un, le, l’ = MASCULINE.

Ex. le tableau / un tableau ; le prisme / un prisme ; un l’appartment

  • ** Note: when a word starts with a vowel, we drop the –e of le and we drop the –a of la, and put an apostrophe: le becomes l’ and la becomes l’ ***
  • une, la, l’ = FEMININE.

Ex. la différence / une différence ; la division / une divison ; la chimie / une chimie ; la lecture / une lecture ; l’activité, une activité
